A Breath of Fresh Air – Michael O’Sullivan Bike Path

The “Great Outdoors” is called as such because it truly is great. Crisp, clean, fresh air and surrounded by nature brings a sense of rejuvenation a calm. The Michael O’Sullivan bike path starts at McKee Road and ending at the intersection of Snelling Highway 59 and West Olive Avenue.

The Bike Path

Michael O'Sullivan Bike Path

The Michael O’Sullivan bike path is 3.6 miles long. The bike path is enjoyed by many residents for biking, recreational jogging, or marathon training. The trail goes past the Kiwanis Kiddieland amusement park and Applegate Park. For the majority of the trail you will be running along Bear Creek. The path is outlined with nature, that being many mature trees along path, the occasional squirrel climbing the trees, and ducks floating in the creek. This along with the crisp air can make for a relaxing walk. You absolutely can listen to your music playlist or your favorite podcast, but I recommend to take a moment to take in and appreciate your surroundings at least once per run.

Where to Start the Path

Great starting points are from McKee Road or at Applegate Park near the Applegate Zoo and Kiwanis Kiddieland amusement park. If you start at McKee road you will be travelling from east to west with Bear Creek along the right side. If you start at Applegate Park you will be running from west to east with Bear Creek along the left side.

Person Running on the Bike Path

In whichever spot you decide to start the trail and in either direction you go, you will be greeted by many friendly residents. There will be fellow trail users. Some will be on a leisurely stroll with their family. Some will be walking their dogs. Others will be running for conditioning or training.

The Michael O’Sullivan bike path is one of the great trails Merced has. With the surrounding nature and friendly community, this is one trail you will want to consider for your outdoor running. Enjoy exploring the trail!
